Presenting a business case at board level requires experience & focus

Writer: Stan StrnadStan Strnad

Board level guys are demanding audience. It is good to understand basic principles to impress them and raise their interest.

Presenting a strategic business case at a board level can be challenging and stressful. The expectations are set high while you have limited time to get the approval or support.

✔️ Informal pre-selling is sometimes a game-changer

✔️ Think about the audience, make your story relevant to them

✔️ Introduce a topic briefly as not everyone is on the same page

✔️ Express clearly what are you asking for (approval, support, decision)

✔️ Focus on high-level information (detailed analysis is for another forum)

✔️ Mention facts only, not weak assumptions

✔️ Be ready to defend a single statement or number with solid arguments

✔️ All is about adding value to a business.

✔️ Share a high-level plan, always with key milestones

✔️ Simple & logical layout with a few slides (supporting info always to backup)

✔️ Good visualization increases impact (bullets, font, colour coding, less is more)

✔️ There must be a key takeout from each slide, and all should understand it

✔️ The very first slide shows the impact on the company’s relevant KPIs

✔️ Be prepared to discuss risks & mitigation actions

✔️ Have detailed business case financials ready in backup
